Silver for the pooja room

Silver is the working metal of the Tamil pooja room, and most of what we sell in silver is meant to be used, not stored. The pieces families come to us for, roughly in the order they buy them:

  • Kuthuvilakku — the traditional oil lamp, from small daily-lighting sizes to tall peacock-finial lamps brought out for functions. A pair is the classic wedding gift to a new household.
  • Kalash and pooja vessels — kumkum chimizh, sombu, panchapatra sets and deep vessels for abhishekam.
  • Idols — Ganesha and Lakshmi idols in solid silver for the home shrine.
  • Tumbler and davara sets — engraved drinking sets, the standard gift for seemantham, housewarming and retirement functions.

Anklets and toe rings

Anklets (kolusu) and toe rings (metti) are worn in silver by long tradition. Kolusu run from fine chains for daily wear to stone-set pairs for children — check the clasp strength on children's anklets, which take the hardest use; we will show you the difference at the counter. Metti are sized to the toe and adjusted while you wait.

How silver is priced

Silver is sold by weight: the day's silver rate multiplied by grams, plus making charges that vary with the fineness of the work. A plain tumbler carries modest making; a chased kuthuvilakku with a cast finial carries more. The rate moves daily — see today's silver rate in Vellore, updated every morning. Heavier gift articles are where the rate matters most: on a 500-gram lamp, a few rupees per gram is a real difference, so families planning a function gift often watch the rate page for a week before buying.

Buying notes

Purity: silver articles vary in fineness by type — ornament silver and vessel silver are alloyed differently for strength. We state the purity of the specific piece on the bill, weighed in front of you. Care: silver tarnishes with air and turmeric alike; a soft-cloth rub restores shine, and pieces used weekly tarnish least. Gifting from a distance: WhatsApp us the occasion and budget and we will send photographs and weights of what fits, ready to collect the same day.
