What makes temple antique jewellery different
Temple jewellery began as ornaments made for deities and temple dancers, and the style keeps that vocabulary: Lakshmi and peacock motifs, deep matte gold rather than a mirror polish, and kemp — the flat-cut red and green stones set in closed gold beds. The "antique" in antique jewellery refers to this finish, not the age of the piece. Each piece is newly crafted in 916 hallmarked gold and deliberately dulled to the heritage tone that suits silk and ceremony.

Building an antique jewellery set
Most families assemble antique jewellery as a matching set rather than single pieces. A typical temple set grows in this order:
- Jhumkas first — Lakshmi or peacock jhumkas are the entry point and the piece worn most often after the wedding.
- Haram or necklace — a temple haram with a deity pendant, or a kasumalai; see our haram design and weight guide.
- Additions over time — vanki (armlet), oddiyanam (waist belt), maang tikka and bangles, often bought for later functions or by the next generation.

Temple antique jewellery is the traditional choice for Tamil weddings and for Bharatanatyam arangetrams, where the matte finish reads beautifully under stage light. Arangetram sets favour lighter weights that sit firmly through a two-hour performance — tell us the date and the costume colours and we will suggest pieces that work. Custom antique work takes four to eight weeks, so plan ahead of the season.
Caring for the antique finish
Never machine-polish an antique piece — polishing strips the matte patina that defines it. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wear, keep pieces in separate soft pouches so kemp settings do not rub, and bring them to us once a year; we clean and check the settings. More in our purity & care guide.
